Committal Ceremony

THE SKIPPER WILL POSITION THE VESSEL WHILST OUR CREW WILL MAKE READY FOR THE COMMITTAL PROCEDURE

The Family will be invited to take their place at the stern of the boat ready for the committal to take place
 
OUR EXPERIENCES OF FAMILIES AND COMMITTALS

  • Some families choose to have a family member read a passage or a poem prior to the Committal
  • In the back ground (picture above) is a Monument to Alfred Lord Tennyson on IOW – often his poem “Crossing the Bar” is read prior to the committal button being pressed*.
  • The boat’s sound system can be used to play favourite music .
  • *A Family member or Friend aboard can if they wish press the button that commences the Committal
  • Often Family &Friends will celebrate the life of loved one with a Champagne Toast – this can be provided aboard as part of some of our packages or as an extra
  • Following the Committal, the Skipper will hold the boat on station to allow time for reflection by those aboard. When all are ready he will commence the return voyage to Lymington
  • The Boat’s MMO Burial at Sea Licence folder will be presented to the family by our Skipper.
  • On the boat’s return to Lymington some families go back to the Mayflower Hotel for a wake gathering
  • A few days later a Certificate of location will be sent to the Funeral Director for presenting to the family

From being notified of the death (usually from the Funeral Directors) we take full
responsibility for obtaining the MMO licence though our MMO online account.

Coffin 
Requirements

The coffin and any inner liner must be made of natural, non-toxic materials.They must both be able to withstand any impact and be able to carry the body.
